Stephon Gander, a 22-year-old male from South Beloit, IL, tragically lost his life on July 28, 2018. He was born on November 1, 1995, in Beloit, WI, and was the son of Michael Zumwalt and Stacie Lynn Osburne. Stephon was known for his love of fishing, cooking, and animals. He was a generous individual who would go out of his way to help others. He is survived by his children, Amaiyah, Sabreena Lynn, John Cyrex, and Seleena Rose, as well as his fiancé, Rosalyn Maquiling.
The
circumstances surrounding Stephon's death were tragic. On June 16, 2018, Stephon Gander, along with 21-year-old Kyle Haynes and 19-year-old Zach Fosberg, was involved in a shooting incident in South Beloit. The altercation occurred on South Lincoln Street and Center Street, one block south of Shirland Avenue. During the incident, Stephon was shot in the head and was later pronounced brain dead. Zach Fosberg was shot in the upper chest and succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while Kyle Haynes sustained gunshot wounds to the leg and abdomen.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of Logan Wunder, a 21-year-old male, and an unidentified 17-year-old juvenile male. Both suspects turned themselves in to the South Beloit Police Department. Logan Wunder was later sentenced to 33 years in prison for the murders of Stephon Gander and Zach Fosberg. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of violence and the impact it had on the lives of the victims and their families.
