Delmonte Johnson, a 19-year-old African American male, was a passionate anti-violence activist who tragically lost his life to the very cause he was fighting against. On the evening of September 5, 2018, Johnson was standing on the sidewalk in the 8600-block of South Euclid Avenue in Chicago's Stony Island Park neighborhood when a tan-colored vehicle approached, and someone inside opened fire.
Johnson was shot in the chest and stomach and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died.
Johnson was an active volunteer with GoodKids MadCity, an organization led by young people of color aiming to end gun violence and press lawmakers to channel more resources to underserved communities. His death was a significant blow to the community, as he was known for his dedication to the cause and his efforts to help children go to Christian Camp.
The shooting occurred just outside his brother's basketball practice. Johnson's brother, Devirgo Johnson, recounted the harrowing experience of laying next to his brother as he bled out from the gunshot wounds. The family and community were devastated by the loss, and a vigil and balloon release were held to honor Johnson's memory.
