Deshawn Rogers, a 26-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on March 12, 2019, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred at a McDonald's restaurant located at 740 E. 47th Street in the Bronzeville neighborhood. According to reports, Deshawn Rogers was involved in an altercation with a male and a female inside the restaurant. During the confrontation, one of the individuals pulled out a gun and shot Rogers in the abdomen.
He was immediately transported to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries about an hour later.
The investigation into Deshawn Rogers' death led to the arrest of Demetrius Gibson, a 23-year-old male, who was charged with first-degree murder. Gibson, who was working as a sales representative for a marketing company, had set up a table outside the McDonald's to solicit customers. The altercation began when Rogers, who had come to the restaurant to eat with a friend, was approached by Gibson's group. A brief exchange of words escalated into a physical confrontation inside the restaurant. During the fight, Rogers put Gibson's brother in a headlock, prompting Gibson to pull out a 9-mm handgun and shoot Rogers twice in the back. Following the shooting, Gibson fled the scene but was later apprehended during a traffic stop on November 3, 2019. Ballistics testing confirmed that the 9-mm handgun found in Gibson's possession matched the shell casings recovered from the McDonald's. Gibson was subsequently charged with unlawful use of a weapon in addition to the murder charge. He was denied bail and held in custody as the legal proceedings continued.
