Darnell C. Steward, a 32-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on July 16, 2019, in East Saint Louis, Illinois. According to reports, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. outside Haymore’s Liquor Store on N. 15th Street. The East St. Louis Police Department responded to calls of shots fired at the location. Upon arrival, they discovered that Darnell had been transported to a hospital across the river in St.
Louis in a private vehicle, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The investigation into Darnell's death revealed that he was shot outside the liquor store. Witnesses reported seeing a man leaving the scene in a white SUV, which had its rear window shattered during the shooting. Additionally, two other men were observed near the victim and the driver of the SUV at the time of the incident. The East St. Louis Police Department, with assistance from the Illinois State Police, launched an investigation to identify and locate these individuals. They sought the public's help in providing any information that could lead to the apprehension of the suspects.
