Derrick Gholston, a 43-year-old African American man, tragically lost his life on September 21, 2019, in Chicago, Illinois. Derrick was a concealed-carry license holder and a dedicated businessman who operated a food truck specializing in jerk chicken. On the evening of his death, Derrick was standing outside the Crispy Cuts barbershop in the Roseland neighborhood when two male robbers approached him, flashed a gun, and demanded his property.
After handing over his belongings, the suspects entered the barbershop to announce another robbery. Derrick, known for his good-hearted nature and willingness to help others, confronted the robbers with his own weapon, leading to a gun battle. Both Derrick and one of the suspected robbers, 18-year-old Carlos Smith, were struck and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where they were pronounced dead within an hour. A 51-year-old man was also shot during the exchange of gunfire. The other suspected robber fled the scene and has not been taken into custody.
Derrick's death was a result of his attempt to intervene during the robbery, showcasing his bravery and dedication to protecting others.
