Terrence Welch, a 35-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on November 24, 2019, in Lansing, Illinois. The incident occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex located at 2141 W. 175th Street. Welch, along with another man, was shot in what appeared to be a targeted attack. The two men managed to drive to a nearby American Sales parking lot, where they were met by officers and paramedics.
Welch was transported to Franciscan Health in Hammond, where he was pronounced dead. The other victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was treated and released from Munster Community Hospital.
Following an extensive investigation by the Lansing police and the FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force, Tyrell Laws, a 23-year-old male from Hazel Crest, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting. Laws was taken into custody on March 11, 2020, after an arrest warrant was issued. He was held without bail and was due back in court on April 15, 2020.
The investigation revealed that the shooting occurred around 7:20 p.m. on November 24, 2019. Officers were responding to calls of multiple shots fired when one of the victims called the police after pulling into a furniture store parking lot about a mile away from the scene. Upon arrival, police found Welch and the other victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of the medical team, Welch succumbed to his injuries.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and further details about the circumstances leading up to the incident have not been disclosed by the authorities. The case highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in the region and the efforts of law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.
