Deangelo Gray, a 39-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on February 19, 2020, in Chicago, Illinois. Gray was found unconscious in the parking lot of the Amber Inn Motel in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and hand. Despite being rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
An autopsy confirmed that Gray died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. when officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 3900 block of South Michigan Avenue. Surveillance footage revealed that Gray approached a Jeep Patriot in the motel's parking lot when someone inside the vehicle opened fire, striking him once. Gray attempted to flee but was shot several more times. Investigators recovered eight 9mm shell casings from the scene. The Jeep, which was missing a front license plate and had cardboard on one of its windows, was last seen heading southbound on Prairie Avenue. The shooting appeared to be robbery-related, and a gun was found on Gray at the hospital.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Deangelo Gray's murder. The investigation is ongoing, with Area Central detectives working to identify and apprehend the suspects involved. The tragic death of Deangelo Gray highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago and the need for continued efforts to address this critical problem.
