Darius, affectionately known as "DJ," had just turned 16 a week before his death. He was born at Stroger Hospital and was described as a vibrant and loving individual who enjoyed fashion and music. His mother, Valencia Pullum, recalled how DJ always seemed to be dancing and laughing, and how he would check in on her if she looked sad or angry. DJ had aspirations of graduating high school and pursuing a career in rap music, inspired by his favorite artist, NBA YoungBoy.
The shooting that claimed DJ's life was not an isolated incident in his community. Just five months earlier, DJ's best friend, Frank Looney, also 16, had been fatally shot. DJ had expressed his fear of dying young and his desire to avoid a life on the streets. Despite his efforts to stay positive and support his family, the loss of his friend had a profound impact on him, and he was often seen listening to his friend's last rap and crying when he was alone.
No arrests have been made in connection with DJ's death, and the investigation remains ongoing. The Chicago police and Area Central detectives are actively working on the case, but no suspects have been identified so far.
