Derrick Mitchell, a 35-year-old African American man from Chicago, Illinois, was tragically killed on May 26, 2020, in Humboldt Park. Mitchell was fatally shot in the chest while inside his apartment, and a 23-year-old woman who was with him was grazed in the leg. The incident was ruled a homicide by the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Davon Sumrall, a 23-year-old man, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Mitchell's death.
Sumrall claimed that the shooting was in self-defense, but investigators found text messages in which he expressed plans to rob Mitchell. Sumrall was held without bail, and his next court date was scheduled for July 6, 2020.
The investigation revealed that Mitchell and the woman were preparing bags of drugs to sell when Sumrall arrived at the apartment. Sumrall confronted Mitchell and the woman, and after a brief exchange, he fired multiple rounds, hitting Mitchell and grazing the woman. Officers recovered Mitchell's revolver and additional evidence from the scene.
The case drew significant attention due to the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the evidence found against Sumrall. The community and Mitchell's family awaited justice as the legal proceedings continued.
