Charlie was attempting to sell his father's Honda Civic through Facebook Marketplace when he was lured to Englewood under the pretense of meeting a buyer. On that fateful day, Charlie, accompanied by his friend Enrique Gonzalez Jr., a 20-year-old Hispanic male, drove to the agreed location at 71st Street and Loomis Avenue.
Charlie's mother followed them in another car but lost track of them at a red light. Despite her attempts to contact him, Charlie did not answer his phone. Later, a detective answered her calls, informing her of the tragic news.
The investigation revealed that Davion Jones, an 18-year-old African American male, was the primary suspect in the murders of Charlie Perez and Enrique Gonzalez Jr. Jones had communicated with Charlie about purchasing the car and was seen getting into the vehicle with both victims shortly before they were found shot to death. Surveillance footage captured Jones wearing a gold do-rag and a white T-shirt with "Gi-Gi" written on it, entering a corner store near the meeting place. Later, he was recorded getting into the passenger seat of the Civic as Charlie drove away. Less than ten minutes later, officers responding to a ShotSpotter alert found Charlie shot twice in the neck in the driver's seat of the Civic, while Enrique was found dead in the back seat with a gunshot wound to the back of his head.
Davion Jones was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was held without bail.
