Eduardo Triano, a 25-year-old male from Chicago, IL, was tragically killed on September 21, 2020, in the city's North Park neighborhood. Triano's death was part of a violent crime spree involving multiple carjackings and murders. On the day of his death, Triano was fatally shot by individuals using a vehicle that had been stolen earlier during a carjacking.
This incident was part of a series of crimes committed by Edson Resendez, Maverick Cela, and Prezila Apreza, all residents of Chicago.
The trio's crime spree began with the murder of 29-year-old Nabil Mahouar during an attempted carjacking in Chicago's Dunning neighborhood. Later that same day, they used a car taken in another carjacking to fatally shoot Eduardo Triano. The federal superseding indictment against Resendez, Cela, and Apreza includes charges of conspiracy, firearm offenses, and multiple carjackings in various locations, including Skokie and Berwyn, IL. The indictment also contains special findings that could make the defendants eligible for the death penalty if convicted.
Resendez, Cela, and Apreza were already facing federal carjacking charges filed in 2022 related to some of the same incidents. The new indictment adds Apreza as a defendant and brings additional charges against all three individuals. The defendants are currently in law enforcement custody, and their arraignment dates on the superseding charges have not yet been scheduled. The public is reminded that an indictment is not evidence of guilt, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
