Printiss Jones, a 25-year-old African American male, was found shot in the head and arm at 7 p.m. on January 4, 2021, in his apartment located in the 7800 block of South Indiana Avenue, Chicago. Responding to a call of gunfire, Chicago police officers discovered Jones in his Chatham neighborhood apartment. Jones, who was paralyzed and used a wheelchair, sold marijuana from his apartment and kept a gun for protection.
The investigation revealed that Andrew McCullum, a 26-year-old felon on
parole, was charged with the murder of Printiss Jones. McCullum's DNA was connected to a blood trail left at the scene, leading to his arrest. On the night of the incident, McCullum and an accomplice allegedly went to Jones' apartment for the sale of a gun. Jones was sitting on an air mattress on the floor with his brother and girlfriend when the suspects arrived. After Jones' girlfriend went into the kitchen for a glass of water and returned, she saw McCullum on top of Jones and his accomplice searching behind the air mattress. Shots were fired, and Jones' girlfriend hid behind the refrigerator while McCullum and the other man fled the scene.
Outside the apartment, McCullum, who had taken Jones' gun, fired several shots at Jones' brother, who was standing in an alley behind the building. McCullum was later found with a gunshot wound to his hand about a half-mile away from the scene. He initially claimed he was shot at a different location but later changed his story. McCullum was treated and released from an area hospital that night.
The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled Jones' death a homicide. McCullum was arrested on May 26, 2021, and charged with first-degree murder. He appeared in bond court, where his bail was set at $750,000.
