Tysean L. Gilmore, a 25-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on March 8, 2021, in East St. Louis, Illinois. The incident occurred when Tysean was sitting in the driver's seat of a car at the intersection of 25th Street and State Street. He was shot multiple times by a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun. The East St. Louis Police Department responded to the scene and found Tysean suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
The investigation into Tysean's death was conducted by the East St. Louis Police Department in collaboration with the Illinois State Police's Division of Criminal Investigation and Public Safety Enforcement Group. Through their efforts, they quickly identified a suspect, Jahmal Alexander, a 37-year-old male from Belleville. Alexander was taken into custody by the Shiloh Police Department without incident and was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. The charging documents revealed that Alexander fired the shots into the vehicle occupied by Tysean, leading to his death.
Alexander's arrest and subsequent charges were announced by the Office of St. Clair County State’s Attorney James Gomric. Alexander is currently being held at the St. Clair County Jail on a $1 million bond. The case has garnered significant attention, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence in the community. Various organizations, such as Better Family Life and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, have been working to address and deescalate gun violence in the area, providing support and resources to those affected by such tragedies.
