Joshua Perkins, a 34-year-old African American man from Peoria, Illinois, tragically lost his life on May 9, 2021, in a fatal shooting at a gas station. The incident occurred at the MacArthur Shell gas station, located at 200 N. MacArthur Highway, around 11:30 p.m. Perkins was sitting in his vehicle at a gas pump when Arenza Brown, a 20-year-old man from Peoria, approached him. The two men, who were acquainted, engaged in a conversation about marijuana and music. During this interaction, Brown noticed a large amount of money on Perkins' person. Brown then returned to his vehicle, but soon came back to Perkins' car, initiating a conversation that quickly escalated into a violent confrontation. Brown pulled out a gun and placed it against Perkins' neck, leading to a struggle during which the gun discharged, fatally wounding Perkins.
Following the shooting, Brown and another individual, Demarian Palmer, who was 18 at the time, fled the scene. Palmer had attempted to enter the back seat of Perkins' vehicle during the altercation but was unable to do so as the door was locked. Both suspects were later apprehended by the police, with firearms found in their possession. Perkins was transported to UnityPoint-Health Methodist by a private vehicle but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The legal proceedings that followed were significant. Arenza Brown was charged with first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He was found guilty and now faces a prison sentence ranging from 20 to 60 years. Demarian Palmer, who was also charged with first-degree murder, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery in connection with the incident. In exchange for his plea, the more severe charges were dropped. Palmer was sentenced to 23 years in prison, with eligibility for parole after serving a minimum of 10 years due to his age at the time of the crime.
