Tyran Evans, a 42-year-old African American man, was tragically shot and killed on May 17, 2021, in East Garfield Park, Chicago. According to reports, Evans was standing outside in the 300 block of North California Avenue when someone fired shots at him from a vehicle. He was struck in the abdomen and arm around 3 p.m. and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Evans' death revealed that Bernard Barry, a 75-year-old felon previously convicted of two murders in the 1970s, was charged with his murder. Barry was sitting in the driver’s seat of a parked car outside an assisted living facility when Evans approached on a bicycle and told Barry to "get out." As Evans swung his fist at Barry, Barry fired his handgun, striking Evans once in the arm. The bullet pierced through Evans’ arm and into the right side of his body. When Evans fell to the ground, Barry got out of the car, moved Evans’ bike to the rear of the car, and began to drive away. An employee at the assisted living facility heard the shots and called 911. Evans later died at Stroger Hospital.
Barry was taken into custody by a SWAT team at his home shortly after the incident. He told detectives conflicting accounts of what happened, but indicated at one point that Evans was trying to carjack him. Judge Arthur Wesley Willis took the possible self-defense argument into account but noted that Barry never called 911 and fled from the scene. Barry was held without bail.
Evans was scheduled to stand trial in July on attempted murder and aggravated battery charges related to a 2019 case. The details of this case were not immediately available.
