Jerome Jenkins, a 35-year-old African American man, was tragically killed on August 1, 2021, in the West Pullman neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred after Jenkins went outside to investigate a brick that had been thrown through his window. As he stepped outside, gunfire erupted, and he was struck multiple times. He was subsequently taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Jenkins' death led to the arrest of
three individuals: Nathaniel Butler Sr., 47, and his two sons, Nathaniel Butler Jr., 20, and Maurice Butler, 23. The altercation that resulted in Jenkins' death began with a physical confrontation between Butler Sr.'s daughter and her ex-boyfriend. Following this altercation, Butler Sr. threw a brick through the window of the ex-boyfriend's home, prompting Jenkins and other family members to go outside. At this point, Butler Sr. and his sons opened fire on the family, with Jenkins being struck in the head and thigh. His father also suffered a graze wound to the hand.
All three Butlers were charged with first-degree murder. Nathaniel Butler Jr. faced an additional charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon without a FOID card. During the investigation, police recovered 26 shell casings from the scene, indicating that two different guns were used in the shooting. The suspects were arrested in different locations: Nathaniel Butler Jr. in Country Club Hills and Maurice Butler in South Escanaba Avenue. Butler Sr. was arrested later and claimed he was intoxicated at the time of the shooting and did not remember throwing the brick.
The case against the Butlers was significant, with the Cook County judge ordering all three to be held without bail. The prosecution's case was bolstered by ballistics evidence and statements from the suspects. Maurice Butler admitted to being at the scene but claimed his brother started the shooting. Nathaniel Butler Jr. denied involvement, while Butler Sr. admitted to being intoxicated and claimed he fled when the shooting started. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of escalating violence and the impact on the community.
