Keeshanna Jackson, an 18-year-old African American female, tragically lost her life on August 22, 2021, in Carbondale, Illinois. Keeshanna was a freshman at Southern Illinois University, having just arrived on campus a week prior with aspirations to expand her nail business. Her promising future was cut short during a shooting at an off-campus party on West Cherry Street. The Carbondale Police Department responded to calls of shots fired around 3 a.m. and found Keeshanna with a life-threatening gunshot wound. Despite immediate efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
The incident also left three others injured: Jyrin Blair, 29; Raheem Sylas, 23; and an unidentified minor. They were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and later released. The shooting was believed to involve multiple shooters and was the result of a feud between two rival groups. The Carbondale Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies, conducted an extensive investigation, interviewing over 100 witnesses and suspects to piece together the events of that night.
Nearly three years later, on August 14, 2024, 22-year-old Keavonte Nesby was charged with Keeshanna Jackson's murder. Nesby faced multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. The charges were announced during a press conference held by the Jackson County State's Attorney and the Carbondale Chief of Police. The authorities emphasized the devastating impact of the violence on Keeshanna's family and the community.
Keeshanna's family expressed a mix of relief and hope upon hearing about the charges. Her aunt, Kechell White, shared that they were grateful for the progress in the case and hopeful for justice. The case against Nesby marked a significant step in the long journey toward accountability for Keeshanna's untimely death. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities not ruling out the possibility of additional arrests as they continue to seek justice for Keeshanna Jackson.
