Jonathan Ceballos, a 22-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on October 31, 2021, in Joliet, Illinois. Jonathan was attending a Halloween party on East Jackson Street when the incident occurred. The party, which was attended by nearly 200 people, turned deadly when gunshots rang out around 12:39 a.m. Jonathan, along with another victim, Holly Mathews, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Jonathan and Holly were not the intended targets of the shooting.
The intended target, Sergio Hernandez, was paralyzed in the shooting and succumbed to his injuries a year later.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that the gunmen fired indiscriminately into the crowd from an elevated position. The Will County Sheriff's Office, along with the United States Marshals Service, apprehended several suspects in connection with the shooting. Among those arrested were David Grijalva, Joskar S. Ramos, Thomas Lopez, and Jeremy Lopez. David Grijalva, a 23-year-old male, faced 12 counts of first-degree murder, five counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He was apprehended at his place of employment in Channahon without incident. Joskar S. Ramos, 18, and brothers Thomas Lopez, 21, and Jeremy Lopez, 19, were also charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and various weapons offenses. All three suspects were identified as members of the Vice Lords street gang and had extensive weapons histories.
The legal proceedings following the arrests have been complex. David Grijalva's defense attorney argued that the Will County State's Attorney's Office did not have sufficient evidence to convict his client. Despite these claims, the charges against Grijalva and the other suspects remained, and they were held on substantial bonds. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in the area and the challenges law enforcement faces in securing convictions in such cases.
