Federico Bautista, a 60-year-old Hispanic man from Chicago, Illinois, tragically lost his life on November 18, 2021. Federico was driving on the Stevenson Expressway when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 4:19 a.m. as Federico was heading to work. He was struck by multiple gunshots, including two in the abdomen and one in the shoulder, causing his car to come to a stop on the shoulder of the expressway.
Federico was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Federico Bautista's death revealed that the shooting was carried out by Joshua Concepcion, a 19-year-old who was already on a recognizance bond for two felony gun charges at the time of the incident. Concepcion was riding in the back seat of a stolen Jeep when he fired 14 rounds into Federico's car. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but Concepcion was later charged with first-degree murder. Evidence against him included DNA found on the interior door handles and rear passenger side of the Jeep, as well as gunshot residue and cellphone location records placing him near the scene of the crime.
In addition to Concepcion, a 17-year-old named Alexis Perez was also implicated in the case. Perez, who had a pending felony gun case in juvenile court, was driving the stolen Jeep during the shooting. Prosecutors alleged that Perez followed Federico onto the expressway and pulled up alongside his car, allowing Concepcion to open fire. Perez was charged with first-degree murder and held without bail. The case against both suspects highlighted the ongoing issue of individuals committing violent crimes while out on bond for previous offenses.
