Gurban Yalchin Oglu Bagirov, a 30-year-old man, was tragically shot to death on December 19, 2021, while driving in the North Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL. The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. in the 5500 block of North Kedzie Avenue. Further investigation into the case led to the arrest of Alexis Del Toro, a 22-year-old man, who was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Bagirov's death. According to Cook County prosecutors, the incident began as a traffic altercation. Del Toro, driving a stolen Jeep, sped past Bagirov's vehicle, leading to a series of attempts by Bagirov to overtake Del Toro. The situation escalated when Del Toro fired six shots from a 10-mm Glock handgun, striking Bagirov in the head. The shooting was captured by a rear-facing dash camera in an Uber vehicle that was ahead of the two cars.
Del Toro's actions were further corroborated by surveillance footage and location data from his phone. On December 20, Del Toro crashed the stolen Jeep in West Rogers Park and was seen fleeing the scene. A water bottle found in the vehicle matched Del Toro's fingerprints. During a subsequent traffic stop, Del Toro attempted to evade police and barricaded himself in an apartment. Officers recovered drugs and two handguns, including the Glock used in the shooting, from a bag found below an open window.
The case against Del Toro included multiple pieces of evidence, such as surveillance footage, witness testimonies, and forensic analysis. The investigation highlighted the use of technology and coordinated efforts by law enforcement to track and apprehend the suspect.
