On December 19, 2021, a tragic incident occurred in Belvidere, Illinois, resulting in the deaths of Benjamin "Ben" Andrew Hintt, a 7-year-old Caucasian boy, his 5-year-old brother Sebastian, and their father, Andrew Hintt. The bodies of Andrew Hintt and his two sons were discovered inside their residence on Union Avenue. All three victims had been fatally shot, and the Boone County Coroner's Office classified their deaths as homicides.
The investigation into the triple homicide revealed that the victims were found by the landlord after the boys' mother contacted him, concerned about not being able to reach Andrew. The police discovered 9mm bullet shell casings at the scene, but the weapon used in the killings was not recovered. Additionally, a Jeep Grand Cherokee owned by Andrew Hintt was missing from the scene, leading investigators to believe it was stolen by the perpetrator(s).
In the aftermath of the murders, the Belvidere Police Department and Boone County State's Attorney's Office conducted an exhaustive investigation. On January 5, 2022, Alize Q. Smith, a 24-year-old man from Huntley, Illinois, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Andrew Hintt and his sons, Benjamin and Sebastian. Smith was held in the Boone County Jail without bond. The charges against Smith included the possibility of a life sentence if convicted, given the severity of the crime and the fact that multiple victims were involved.
The community of Belvidere was deeply affected by the tragedy, with many expressing their condolences and support for the Hintt family. A vigil was held in memory of the victims, where family, friends, and community members gathered to mourn the loss and offer their support. The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings aimed to bring justice and accountability for the family and the community.
