Raymond Jackson Jr., a 36-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on February 1, 2022, in Glenwood, Illinois. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Spruce Lane. When police arrived at the scene, they found Jackson with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 10 a.m.
The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide.
The investigation into Jackson's death revealed that he was targeted, and those involved fled the scene in a silver or tan minivan. The case took a significant turn when Xavier Tucker, a 34-year-old African American male from Chicago, was charged with first-degree murder for Jackson's death. Tucker was already on electronic monitoring for a pending first-degree murder case and a separate felony gun charge at the time of the incident. He was found unconscious in his car with a gun sticking out of his pocket, leading to his arrest.
During a court session, it was revealed that Tucker had a history of felony convictions, including aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Despite his criminal record, Tucker's defense attorney argued that he had strong ties to the community, attended church, and was actively involved in community outreach. Tucker vehemently denied all charges and maintained his innocence.
Tucker's bail was initially set at $2 million, requiring him to post 10% to be released. However, he was also held without bond on a separate charge. The legal proceedings continued with Tucker's next court appearance scheduled at the Markham courthouse. The case highlighted the complexities of the criminal justice system and the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing violent crimes in the community.
