On February 8, 2022, Uriel Rogers-Knox, a 16-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago, IL. Uriel had moved to Chicago from Minneapolis against his family's wishes, seeking to live with extended family in the city. His mother, Negaya Knox, described him as a spirited and intuitive young man who loved water parks and barbecues.
Despite his vibrant personality, Uriel's decision to move to Chicago led to a fatal encounter.
The incident occurred in the 6200 block of South Greenwood Avenue, just two blocks south of the University of Chicago. Uriel was shot in the face by a 19-year-old man named Sir Mario Ford. The shooting was reportedly sparked by a dispute involving a crying baby. Ford, who lived across the street from Uriel, became involved in an argument with Uriel and others after the mother of Ford's baby dropped off the child at Ford's apartment. The argument escalated, leading Ford's sister to spray mace on Uriel and the baby's mother. Ford then emerged from his apartment, pulled out a revolver, and fired twice, hitting Uriel.
Uriel was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Ford was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and held without bond. During the investigation, Ford was found to have gunshot residue on his body, further implicating him in the shooting. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of a domestic dispute that spiraled out of control.
Uriel's death was one of two fatal shootings of teenage boys in Chicago on the same day. Less than an hour earlier, 15-year-old Michael Brown was also gunned down while walking home from school in the Bronzeville neighborhood. The loss of these young lives underscored the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago and the devastating impact it has on families and communities.
