On the morning of April 18, 2022, 84-year-old Hispanic male Jaime Garcia was found deceased from a gunshot wound in his home on the 20000 block of Hickory Hills Road in rural Sterling, Illinois. Born on September 23, 1937, in Monterrey, Mexico, Jaime Garcia was a devout Christian who attended First Baptist Church in Sterling for over five decades. He was known for his love of music, often singing and playing guitar for his family, and was deeply respected by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his children, siblings, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
At approximately 9:04 a.m., the Whiteside County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting gunshots and a possible injury at the residence. Further reports indicated that a 16-year-old family member had fled the scene on foot, armed with a shotgun. Deputies arrived to find Jaime Garcia deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. An autopsy was scheduled for the following day in Rockford, Illinois.
Around 9:34 a.m., law enforcement apprehended the 16-year-old suspect in the 20000 block of Ridge Road. A shotgun was recovered along the path the suspect had taken while fleeing. The juvenile was taken into custody and detained at the Mary Davis Juvenile Detention Center, pending further court proceedings.
The Whiteside County Sheriff's Office was assisted in the investigation by the Illinois State Police, Illinois Department of Conservation Police, Sterling Police Department, Rock Falls and Milledgeville Fire Departments, CGH EMS, the Whiteside County Coroner's Office, and the Whiteside County State's Attorney's Office. Authorities indicated that there was no danger to the public following the incident.
