Nikki Conner, a 22-year-old African American woman, was tragically shot and killed on June 21, 2022, in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, IL. According to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office, Nikki Conner was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center shortly after the incident.

The investigation into Nikki Conner's death revealed that Marcell Hunter, a 27-year-old man with a history of felony charges, was responsible for the shooting. Hunter, who was on electronic monitoring at the time due to three pending cases, had tampered with his monitoring bracelet on the day of the incident. He was not supposed to leave his home but managed to attend a party where the shooting occurred. The party was a gathering after a funeral that Nikki Conner had attended earlier in the day. Conner and her friends were urged to leave the party as they were considered outsiders. When they retreated to a corner to talk, Hunter approached them with a handgun, demanded they leave, and then shot Conner in the head and legs.
Following the shooting, Conner’s friends identified Hunter through Facebook profiles and provided this information to the police. Hunter was arrested at his home in South Shore and was charged with murder. During his bail hearing, prosecutors detailed Hunter's extensive criminal history, including previous felony charges and instances of skipping court hearings. Despite initially denying any knowledge of the shooting, Hunter requested a lawyer when confronted with the electronic monitoring evidence.
