Ashley Nicole Hardin, a 38-year-old woman from Rockford, Illinois, tragically lost her life on July 23, 2022. Ashley, who was born on April 8, 1984, in Sterling, Illinois, was a beloved mother of three children and worked as a receptionist at Mercy Health. She was known for her beautiful singing voice and her dedication to her family and friends.

On the early morning of July 23, 2022, Ashley was reported missing by her son after they both smelled gas and went outside to investigate. Her son saw her near a car, but she did not return to the house. Later that day, her body was discovered behind a business in Roscoe, Illinois. She had suffered two gunshot wounds and other injuries. The investigation quickly identified Rayshawn Smith, a 46-year-old man, as a suspect. Smith, who had a prior relationship with Ashley, was found with evidence linking him to the crime and was arrested later that morning.

Court documents revealed that Smith had planned to pour gasoline on Ashley's house and set it on fire, but Ashley caught him in the act and left with him to protect her children. Milk jugs containing gasoline were found on the property, and at least one jug had been poured on the house. Surveillance footage showed Smith's vehicle at the crime scene, and he later posted a video on Facebook referencing his actions and Ashley.

Smith was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated unlawful restraint. He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Ashley Nicole Hardin, with an additional sentence for the firearm enhancement. Tragically, Smith died in prison on Christmas Day 2022, while serving his sentence. The details of his death remain unknown.

Ashley Nicole Hardin's death was a devastating loss for her family and community. Her bravery in protecting her children and her tragic end have left a lasting impact on those who knew and loved her.
