Shaniya Daniels, a 15-year-old African American girl from Chicago, Illinois, tragically lost her life on July 26, 2022. The investigation into Shaniya Daniels' death revealed that her 20-year-old brother, Lawrence Daniels, was responsible for the fatal shooting. Lawrence claimed that he was assembling a "ghost gun" in a bedroom of their home when it accidentally discharged, striking his sister in the head. Ghost guns are unserialized and untraceable firearms that can be bought online and assembled at home. Lawrence initially denied shooting his sister but later admitted to it, expressing remorse and insisting that it was an accident. He explained that he did not believe the gun would fire because it was missing several parts and screws.
Lawrence Daniels was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with involuntary manslaughter. During the investigation, police found a bag containing two handguns, including the partially assembled ghost gun, outside the apartment building. The bag had been dropped from a third-floor window. Lawrence admitted to throwing the guns out the window after the shooting. He also told police that he hoped his sister would survive and that he had considered taking his own life following the incident.
