Barry Dean Melear, a 29-year-old white male, was a police officer with the Atlanta Police Department. On September 23, 1977, Officer Melear was tragically killed in the line of duty. He and his partner were working a special car theft detail when they apprehended three suspects breaking into a vehicle. As they were searching the suspects, one of the men pulled out a handgun and shot Officer Melear in the head, resulting in his immediate death.
