On May 16, 1979, Patrolman Thomas Rowry Jr., a 27-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life in Union Point, Georgia. Rowry was shot and killed by a suspect inside the Union Point City Hall. The incident began when the suspect, who had been arrested for drunk driving, overpowered another officer who was in the process of locking him up. The suspect managed to gain control of the officer's weapon and subsequently shot both officers, resulting in the death of Patrolman Rowry.
