Patrolman Robert L. Gotel, a 23-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on August 27, 1979, in Monticello, Georgia. He was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a 99-year-old man who had been brandishing a firearm. The incident occurred when Patrolman Gotel, along with the police chief, tried to enter the suspect's home to make the arrest. The elderly man fired a round from a pistol, which struck Patrolman Gotel in the head, leading to his untimely death.
