On the evening of March 6, 1986, in Newton County, Georgia, 11-year-old Lisa Renee Chapman was spending time with her aunt, Martha Ann Chapman Matich, at Chapman's Grocery, where Matich worked. Just after closing time, Melbert Ray Ford, a former boyfriend of Matich, arrived at the store. In the weeks following their breakup, Ford had been harassing Matich and had told friends of his plans to rob the store and kill her.
