In the late summer of 1990, on a quiet dirt road in Spalding County, Georgia, a grim discovery was made. The bodies of Arthur Lee Jones and Linda Lisa Seaborne were found inside a car on August 7th. Both had been shot in the head at close range. The subsequent investigation into the double homicide would unravel a story of a dispute over a small sum of money that ended in a calculated and brutal act of violence.
Investigators quickly focused their attention on Curtis Osborne. At the time, Osborne was dating Melinda Jones, the sister of Arthur Lee Jones. It came to light that Jones had entrusted Osborne with selling his motorcycle, and Osborne had pocketed the $400 from the sale. When Jones confronted him about the money, Osborne concocted a fatal plan to resolve the debt.
The evidence painted a clear picture of the final moments of Jones and Seaborne's lives. They were shot, apparently from the back seat of the vehicle. Osborne later confessed to the shootings but claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Jones was reaching for a weapon. However, the forensic evidence contradicted his story. Powder burns and blood spatter patterns indicated that Jones was sitting upright when he was shot, with the muzzle of the gun only an inch from his head.
Curtis Osborne was arrested just two days after the murders. His trial in Spalding County resulted in a conviction for the murders of both Arthur Lee Jones and Linda Lisa Seaborne. In August of 1991, he was sentenced to death for his crimes. Despite appeals, including claims of inadequate legal representation, his conviction was upheld. After nearly 17 years on death row, Curtis Osborne was executed by lethal injection on June 4, 2008.
