In the fading light of a late March evening in Atlanta, Georgia, the life of a young police officer, Russell Travis 'Rusty' Stalnaker, was tragically cut short. On March 31, 1999, the 24-year-old white male officer was on patrol on Peachtree Street near Pine Street when he and his fellow officers observed a man pushing a truck down the road. They stopped to investigate the suspicious activity, a seemingly routine encounter that would soon escalate into a fatal struggle.
As the officers
attempted to speak with the individual, a physical altercation ensued. The officers wrestled the suspect to the ground in an effort to handcuff him. In the midst of the chaotic struggle, the man managed to pull out a handgun. A shot rang out, and Officer Stalnaker was fatally wounded. The suspect was also shot and wounded by other officers at the scene but managed to escape in a nearby patrol car. His flight was short-lived, however, as he crashed the vehicle just a block away. Desperate, he then attempted to carjack a woman in front of a church, but her screams thwarted his efforts. He fled into the church, where he was ultimately subdued by the pastor who was in the middle of an evening service.
The apprehension of the suspect brought a swift, if not immediate, resolution to the case. On May 2, 2001, the man responsible for Officer Stalnaker's death pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Officer Stalnaker had served with the Atlanta Police Department for three years and was assigned to Zone 5. He was survived by his wife.
