On a summer evening in Atlanta, Georgia, the life of 18-year-old Katerius Richie Moody, an African American male, was cut short by gunfire. The date was June 26, 2010, and Moody, an aspiring rapper known as 'Richie' or 'Terry,' was at a large block party at the Hidden Cove apartment complex in East Point. The event was billed as the '6th Annual RIP Day For Fallen Soldiers,' a gathering to remember those who had passed away.
Moody, a recent graduate of Mays High School and a member of the hip-hop group the Polo Boys, had just performed with his group when a fight broke out amongst the crowd of roughly 1,500 people.
In the midst of the altercation, at approximately 9:30 p.m., at least one individual produced a firearm and began shooting into the crowd. Moody was struck in the torso by a bullet and fatally wounded. Four other individuals were also injured in the shooting. Following the incident, East Point police began searching for at least two gunmen, though descriptions of the suspects were not immediately available. The investigation into Moody's death proved to be challenging, and publicly available information regarding any arrests or suspects being held accountable for the murder is scarce.
Katerius Moody was remembered by his family as an outgoing and outstanding young man who was beloved by many. Having lost his mother at a young age, he was described as a father figure to his younger brother. At the time of his death, Moody was expecting a child and had plans to attend Fort Valley State University to further his passion for music. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Moody's family held a vigil and an anti-violence rally. Additionally, the mothers of his children filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the owners and managers of the Hidden Cove Apartments, alleging that the complex failed to provide adequate security for the large event, citing a history of criminal activity in the area.
