In the quiet town of Tifton, Georgia, a late Sunday evening in March of 2014 was shattered by violence that would claim the life of 62-year-old Sylvester Downs. On the night of March 23rd, while a small group of people were playing cards at his residence at 704 East 6th Street, two men forced their way into the home, demanding money. The intruders, one brandishing a black and silver handgun, created a scene of terror as they shouted for money.
During the chaos, a struggle ensued between Mr. Downs and one of the armed men in the hallway of his home. A single gunshot echoed through the house, and Sylvester Downs fell, having been fatally wounded while defending his home and family. The two assailants then fled the scene, leaving behind a community in shock and a family in mourning. When police and paramedics arrived, they found Mr. Downs unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at his residence.
In the weeks that followed the tragic event, the Tifton Police Department, with assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Tift County Sheriff's Office, launched an intensive investigation. Their efforts led to the arrests of three individuals in April 2014. Deonta Rashad Rich, 20, Justin Rashad Dixon, 23, and Consurilla McCray Mayo, 34, all from the Tifton area, were taken into custody and charged with armed robbery and felony murder in connection with the home invasion and the death of Sylvester Downs.
The legal process culminated in the trial of Deonta Rashad Rich in September 2016. After two days of deliberation, a jury found Rich guilty of felony murder, two counts of armed robbery, and one count of kidnapping. During the sentencing, a family representative spoke of Mr. Downs as a man who was weak and could barely walk, yet he tried to defend his family. Rich, while expressing sorrow for the family's loss, maintained his innocence, claiming he did not pull the trigger. Citing his prior felony record, the judge sentenced Deonta Rashad Rich to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
