Willie Grier Jr., a 64-year-old Black man from Atlanta, was killed in the early hours of July 4, 2014, after violence erupted at the Aspen Courts Apartments in the 1600 block of Stanton Road SW. According to contemporaneous reporting, Atlanta police were first called to the complex just before 12:50 a.m. on a fight call, but the people there were described as uncooperative and officers left without getting much from the scene.
Less than an hour later, police were summoned back on a report of a person shot, and this time they found Grier outside with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead, and the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office identified him as the victim. Another person was also shot but survived with injuries reported as non-life-threatening, a detail that gave the case the feel of a chaotic confrontation that spiraled quickly and violently in the dark between one police response and the next.
The online reporting located on the case says police moved fast. By the afternoon of July 5, authorities had identified Anthony Jason Brown, 24, as the suspect and arrested him. He was charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault, and he was reported to be in the Fulton County Jail.
