In the early morning hours of October 4, 2024, a resident of the Avana Westside apartment complex in northwest Atlanta became the victim of a fatal encounter. Tasmin Thomell Harris, a 45-year-old Black male, was shot and killed. The incident unfolded around 12:15 a.m. on Huff Road when Harris apparently interrupted an individual breaking into his vehicle. The armed suspect fired at Harris, who was then rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, but he did not survive his injuries.
The community was shaken by the violent act, prompting calls for increased security measures in the area.
Originally from Lanett, Alabama, Harris was remembered by his family, including his parents, Joann Goodwin and Billy Jackson, two sisters, and numerous other relatives and friends. He was known by those close to him for his friendly and comical nature. His loved ones held a funeral service for him on October 11, 2024, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in LaFayette, Alabama, and he was laid to rest at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett.
The Atlanta Police Department began an investigation into the homicide. In December of 2024, their efforts led to the arrest of a suspect. Felix Adams was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Tasmin Harris. The investigation has highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in the city.
