On a summer afternoon in 2014, a verbal confrontation between two young men who lived in the same Brookhaven, Georgia, apartment complex escalated into the city's first homicide. Justin Acevedo, a 22-year-old male, was shot in the chest on July 31, 2014, on North Cliff Valley Way. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The fatal encounter marked a somber milestone for the newly formed Brookhaven Police Department, which had been established just one year prior.
