On a summer afternoon in 2014, a verbal confrontation between two young men who lived in the same Brookhaven, Georgia, apartment complex escalated into the city's first homicide. Justin Acevedo, a 22-year-old male, was shot in the chest on July 31, 2014, on North Cliff Valley Way. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The fatal encounter marked a somber milestone for the newly formed Brookhaven Police Department, which had been established just one year prior.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect, 18-year-old Juan Carlos Ramirez, who resided in the same Parke Towne North Apartments as Acevedo. Witnesses reported seeing a group of people, including the shooter, fleeing the scene after the gunshot. Police located a group of four individuals they believed were involved. Ramirez was arrested and charged with murder, felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and felony possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Detectives recovered the gun believed to have been used in the shooting, along with marijuana.
Three other individuals were also arrested in connection with the incident. Ileanna Martinez, 21, was charged with felony tampering with evidence, giving a false name and birthday, and misdemeanor marijuana possession. Petra Pineda Cortez, 18, and Francisco Munoz, 22, were both charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction of law enforcement. All four were taken to the DeKalb County Jail.
The legal proceedings culminated in June 2016, when Juan Carlos Ramirez was found guilty of the murder of Justin Acevedo. In addition to the murder conviction, he was also found guilty of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. A DeKalb County Superior Court judge sentenced Ramirez to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years, plus an additional five years to be served consecutively.
