In the late afternoon of September 13, 2014, Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Andrew Norris, a 24-year-old male, responded to a call in Bolingbroke, Georgia, that would end his life. Norris, along with his partner, Deputy Jeff Wilson, was dispatched to a residence on Haley Lane following a report of a man attempting suicide who was said to be armed. The call came in around 5:45 p.m., setting in motion a chain of events that would leave a community in mourning.
Upon their arrival at the home, the two deputies were met with immediate gunfire. The man inside, later identified as Christopher Keith Calmer, opened fire on Norris and Wilson. Both deputies were struck by the gunfire. Despite being wounded, Deputy Wilson was able to return fire and ultimately handcuff the suspect. Deputy Norris sustained a critical gunshot wound to the head. Both deputies and the suspect, who was also wounded, were transported to the Medical Center of Central Georgia for treatment.
Deputy Michael Norris was pronounced brain dead the following day, on September 14, 2014. He was kept on life support for two more days to facilitate organ donation. His partner, Deputy Jeff Wilson, survived his injuries. The man responsible for the shooting, Christopher Keith Calmer, was treated for his injuries and taken into custody.
Following an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Christopher Keith Calmer faced multiple charges, including murder. In September 2017, a jury found Calmer guilty of murder, aggravated assault, and criminal attempt to commit murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Appeals filed by Calmer's legal team were later denied by the Georgia Supreme Court, upholding his conviction and sentence.
