Eric Shaw was 37, a Black man, when a summer night in Columbus, Georgia turned violent at the Southside Court Apartments. In the early hours of July 21, 2015, he and his girlfriend were in the parking lot when gunfire erupted, striking them both; Shaw took a gunshot wound to the head, and his girlfriend was hit in the leg and buttock. She was treated and released, while Shaw’s injuries set him on a far longer, harsher path.
