Eric Shaw was 37, a Black man, when a summer night in Columbus, Georgia turned violent at the Southside Court Apartments. In the early hours of July 21, 2015, he and his girlfriend were in the parking lot when gunfire erupted, striking them both; Shaw took a gunshot wound to the head, and his girlfriend was hit in the leg and buttock. She was treated and released, while Shaw’s injuries set him on a far longer, harsher path.
For months, the shooting lingered as an open wound—one of those cases that doesn’t end when the sirens fade. Shaw survived the initial attack and was hospitalized, eventually being released on October 6, 2015. But the damage didn’t let go. He was readmitted on October 15 with complications tied to blood clots, and on October 20, 2015, he died in the Midtown Medical ICU. The Muscogee County coroner, Buddy Bryan, confirmed his death and counted it as Columbus’s fourteenth homicide of that year.
