In the fall of 2015, a gathering of friends at a home in southwest Atlanta turned into a scene of violence and tragedy, claiming the life of 41-year-old Marquis Stephens, an African American male. On the evening of October 7, 2015, Stephens was at a house party on Wanda Circle, where friends had gathered for a fish fry and to watch television. While some of the guests were in the dining room engaged in a game of dominoes, the night took a devastating turn.
Two men, later identified as
Kevin Reeves and Rodney Gibbs, arrived at the residence. Gibbs entered the dining room and, without warning, began shooting. As chaos erupted, the men at the domino table overturned it for cover. Stephens, who was also armed, drew his own weapon and fired, striking Gibbs in the hand and thigh. Gibbs returned fire, fatally wounding Stephens in the abdomen. The two assailants continued to fire their weapons as they retreated from the house, killing a dog in the front yard before fleeing the scene. Witnesses rushed Marquis Stephens to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the homicide led Atlanta police to Kevin Reeves and Rodney Gibbs. Both men were subsequently arrested and faced a lengthy indictment that included charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, burglary, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The ensuing legal proceedings revealed the chaotic nature of the gunfight that had claimed Stephens's life.
Ultimately, both men were held accountable for their roles in the deadly shooting. Kevin Reeves was convicted of the malice murder of Marquis Stephens, along with several other charges. His appeal for a new trial was denied, and his convictions were largely upheld by the Georgia Supreme Court. Rodney Gibbs was convicted of felony murder and aggravated assault, among other crimes. His defense team argued that the shooting was an act of self-defense during a drug transaction that had gone awry, but this claim did not persuade the court. The Georgia Supreme Court affirmed Gibbs's convictions, bringing a close to the legal chapter of a night that ended in a senseless loss of life.
