In a quiet Norcross neighborhood, a day of youthful play ended in tragedy for 11-year-old Alan Martinez. A student at Summerour Middle School, the young boy was in the garage of his home with a 9-year-old friend when they came across a handgun. While handling the firearm, it discharged, inflicting a fatal wound upon Alan.
His mother was inside the house at the time of the incident and heard the gunshot. Despite the tragic outcome, Gwinnett County Police determined the shooting to be an unfortunate accident. Investigators confirmed that Alan was playing with the gun when it went off. Consequently, no charges were filed in connection with his death. The incident served as a somber reminder from law enforcement about the critical importance of securely storing firearms away from children.
