In the summer of 2022, a devastating act of violence cut short the lives of two young men in Baltimore. On the evening of August 12th, 23-year-old Leion Davis Jr. and 24-year-old William Ferebee were ambushed and fatally shot while sitting in a parked vehicle in the 4000 block of Wabash Avenue. The brazen attack, which unfolded around 8:30 p.m., left the East Arlington neighborhood shaken and authorities searching for those responsible. An eyewitness reported seeing a red, four-door vehicle with tinted windows fleeing the scene immediately after the gunshots rang out. Investigators at the scene recovered numerous 9mm and. 40 caliber casings from outside and inside the victims' car, indicating the intensity of the assault.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly gained momentum. A crucial piece of evidence emerged when a woman reported her red 2008 Acura stolen on the same day as the murders. This vehicle matched the description of the getaway car. However, the woman later admitted to filing a false report at the direction of Datuan Blanchard, with whom she had children. She confessed that Blanchard had called her and instructed her to report the car stolen, and she could hear his cousin in the background during the call. Three days after the killings, she revealed to detectives that Blanchard had admitted his involvement, stating that he and two associates were responsible for the double homicide and that he had been the driver. She also informed them that the motive for the murders was monetary. This witness later pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact and agreed to testify against Blanchard.
Cell phone records further implicated Datuan Blanchard, placing his phone in the vicinity of the 4000 block of Wabash Avenue just minutes before the fatal shootings. The phone's location data then showed it moving a considerable distance away shortly after the murders occurred. Based on the witness testimony and the corroborating cell phone evidence, Datuan Blanchard was arrested and charged with the murders of Leion Davis Jr. and William Ferebee. In June 2024, a Baltimore City jury convicted Blanchard on all charges related to the double homicide, including two counts of first-degree murder. In September 2024, the now 25-year-old was sentenced to four life sentences plus 40 years for his role as the getaway driver in what was described as a contract killing. During the sentencing, the prosecutor stated that the investigation into other perpetrators involved in the murders remains ongoing. The families of both victims delivered emotional statements in court, remembering Leion Davis Jr. as a loving father and William Ferebee as a man with dreams of owning his own business.
