In the late hours of a Wednesday night in Sylvester, Georgia, the life of 25-year-old Dontavious Jamar Rutland was tragically cut short. On November 30, 2016, Rutland was at his home on Covey Street when intruders forced their way inside. During the home invasion, he was shot in the stomach. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Rutland succumbed to his injuries and died. Before he passed, he was reportedly able to tell police that a man with a shotgun had attacked him.
The Sylvester Police Department immediately began a search for those responsible for the fatal shooting. Their investigation led to the arrests of three individuals in connection with the home invasion and Rutland's death. The suspects were identified as 21-year-old Nelson Hamilton, 18-year-old Eric Brown, and Javiel Toomer. All three men were slated to be charged with Rutland's murder. The arrests brought a swift, though not complete, resolution to the violent intrusion that ended a young man's life, leaving a community to grapple with the senseless act.
