On a summer evening in Morrow, Georgia, the life of a promising young man, Rodricous Gates Jr., was cut short. The 20-year-old African American male, a former standout quarterback at Mundy's Mill High School, was visiting a friend at the Hampton Downs Apartments on Mount Zion Boulevard on August 6, 2017. He did not reside at the complex and his family was initially unsure why he would be a target. That night, an argument erupted between Gates and another man behind one of the apartment buildings, a dispute that tragically escalated to gunfire.
After being shot, Gates ran from behind building number 6 to the front of building 8, where he collapsed in the parking lot and succumbed to his injuries. Clayton County police arrived to find him face down, and the initial investigation left them with few leads and no immediate suspects. They appealed to the public for information, hoping to piece together the events that led to the senseless violence that had taken the life of a young man described by his father as a 'good, God-fearing kid with a big heart.'
The investigation gained momentum when police questioned a woman, Shantavier Willis, who was present at the scene. However, she provided investigators with a false name for the man she was with, stalling the search for the shooter. It wasn't until later that an anonymous tip identified the suspect as 26-year-old Marcus Fraser. As police began their search, they discovered that Fraser had already turned himself in to authorities in New York on an outstanding warrant for a prior conviction.
With Fraser in custody, Clayton County authorities secured warrants for his arrest on multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, criminal attempt to distribute marijuana, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Shantavier Willis also faced legal consequences for her efforts to mislead the police; a warrant was issued for her arrest on charges of making false statements. In February 2019, Marcus Fraser was convicted for the murder of Rodricous Gates Jr. and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a measure of justice to a family and community left grieving the loss of a beloved young man.
