In the quiet town of Gray, Georgia, the life of Donald Marquise Hardwick, a 24-year-old African American male, was violently cut short on November 13, 2017. He was discovered shot to death in his apartment at the Northside Villas Apartment complex located off of Eatonton Highway. Known to his loved ones as 'Marquise,' he was remembered for his beautiful smile and kind heart. A father of two, he had attended Jones County High School and later earned his GED from Central Georgia Technical College with aspirations of playing basketball at New Hampshire Technical College.
The investigation into Hardwick's death led authorities to three suspects: Cameron Myles Banks, Justerrious Shyheim Canty, and Jaqualan Desean Clark. Banks and Canty, both 19 at the time, were known to be friends with Hardwick. The motive for the brutal slaying was determined to be gang retaliation. Investigators believe the suspects felt Hardwick had shown disrespect to their gang, known as RAM-Bros following a dispute over a woman. In a shocking act of violence, Hardwick was shot 24 times while he lay in his bed.
In December 2017, Banks and Canty were arrested and charged with felony murder. Clark, who was 20 at the time, was also identified as a suspect and was apprehended shortly after with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service. The legal proceedings faced considerable delays, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which postponed the trial for several years. However, the prosecution persisted, and in late September 2022, the three men stood trial.
A Jones County jury found Banks, Canty, and Clark guilty on all counts, which included murder and felony murder. The sentences handed down were substantial, reflecting the heinous nature of the crime. Cameron Banks received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 40 years. Justerrious Shyheim Canty was sentenced to life without parole plus 50 years, and Jaqualan Desean Clark received a sentence of life without parole plus 70 years. The convictions brought a measure of closure to Hardwick's grieving family, though the pain of their loss endures.
