In a quiet Newnan, Georgia neighborhood, the life of 22-year-old Jordan Malik McCoy was cut short on the evening of November 28, 2018. The events leading to his death reportedly began with a dispute between McCoy and the sister of another man, Austin Scandrick. It was alleged that McCoy had slapped or assaulted her, an act which is believed to have triggered the violent confrontation that followed.
Later that day, the disagreement escalated dramatically when McCoy and Scandrick, both
reportedly armed, confronted each other. Multiple gunshots shattered the evening's calm, with witnesses telling police they saw both men pointing guns at one another. At least ten shots were fired, with some striking and killing McCoy. The gunfire also endangered others in the vicinity, as bullets pierced a nearby home and a car where a one-year-old child was sitting.
After being shot, McCoy staggered to the backyard of a neighboring home and collapsed on the doorstep. His body was not discovered until the early hours of the following morning, around 1:00 a.m., when the homeowner returned from work. Initially mistaking the body for a deer, he soon realized the tragic truth and contacted the authorities.
Austin Scandrick voluntarily went to the Newnan Police Department for questioning following the shooting but before McCoy's body had been found. After an investigation into the incident, Scandrick was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and felony murder in connection with the death of Jordan Malik McCoy.
