In the early morning hours of March 31, 2019, a night that began with the sounds of music at a concert in Folkston, Georgia, ended in a burst of violence that claimed the life of 21-year-old Sheeyta Elaine Herrin. A Black female from Camden County, Herrin was in the parking lot of the American Legion on Okefenokee Drive as the event was letting out. It was approximately 3:21 a.m. when gunfire erupted, and a single bullet struck and fatally wounded her.
The chaos of that morning did not end in the American Legion parking lot. Just minutes after the shooting that killed Herrin, another violent incident unfolded at a nearby Flash Foods convenience store. Investigators believe some of the same individuals were involved in this second altercation, which resulted in another person suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Charlton County Sheriff's Office in the investigation of both shootings.
In the wake of the two incidents, multiple arrests were made in connection with the events of that night. However, despite these arrests, authorities have not been able to definitively link any single individual to the direct act of Herrin's death. No one has been formally charged with her murder, leaving her case as an unsolved homicide. The investigation remains open as law enforcement continues to seek information from the public to bring closure to the family of Sheeyta Elaine Herrin.
