Do you know who murdered Sheetya Elaine Herrin?
In the early hours of Sunday, March 31, 2019, the life of 21-year-old Sheetya Elaine Herrin, a Black female from Camden County, was tragically cut short by an act of violence in Folkston, Georgia. The evening had begun with the sounds of music and community at a concert held at the American Legion building on Okefenokee Drive. However, the atmosphere of celebration soured as the event concluded and attendees began to depart.
As people spilled out into the parking lot around 3:21 a.m., the night was shattered by the sound of gunfire. In the ensuing chaos, Sheetya was struck by a stray bullet and fatally wounded. Two other young women were also injured in the shooting but thankfully survived. The violence of that night was not contained to the American Legion. Just minutes after the first shots were fired, another shooting incident erupted at a nearby Flash Foods convenience store. This second altercation, which authorities believe may be connected to the first, resulted in two men sustaining non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
In the aftermath of the violence, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Charlton County Sheriff's Office and the Folkston Police Department in their investigation. While several individuals were arrested in connection with the two related incidents, a direct link to Sheetya's death could not be established. To this day, no one has been charged with her murder, and her case remains an unsolved homicide. The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement continues to seek information from the public that could lead to an arrest and bring closure to the family of Sheetya Elaine Herrin.
