Bra'vion Canty, a 25-year-old African American male, was on the patio of his mother's apartment at the Laurel Park Apartments in Riverdale, Georgia, on May 30, 2019, when the evening took a tragic turn. He and his mother, Brenda Jackson, were approached by three men who asked to buy cigarettes. Canty informed them that they did not sell cigarettes, but the men were persistent.
The situation quickly escalated when one of the men claimed to run the apartment complex and made a gang reference. He then lifted his shirt to reveal a firearm. In an effort to protect his family, Canty followed the men as they began to walk away, telling them to leave his family alone. Shortly after, multiple gunshots rang out. His mother found him lying on the ground, having been fatally wounded.
In the wake of the shooting, Clayton County police began a search for the group of men involved. Jackson stated that detectives informed her they had 'good leads' in the case. However, despite the ongoing investigation and the family's hope for justice, there have been no reports of any arrests or charges filed in connection with the murder of Bra'vion Canty.
